Description

This course explores and critically analyses current issues and trends in teaching and learning Society and Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion in NSW secondary schools. Students will explore the role and value of HSIE curriculum; the K-12 HSIE learning continuum; and their contribution to civics and citizenship education. Students will explore lesson planning, programming, course and assessment requirements of the NSW Higher School Certificate; and strategies, technologies, and resources for teaching and learning Society and Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion. Particular attention will also be given to the overlapping concepts operating within these curricula.

    Learning outcomes

    On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

    1. Interpret, analyse and discuss the role and value of studying Society and Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion; their place within the NSW K-12 HSIE learning continuum; and contribution to civics and citizenship education.

    2. Develop and evaluate lesson plans, programs and assessment tasks for Stage 6 Society and Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion.

    3. Synthesise and generate a range of strategies, technologies and resources for teaching and assessing Stage 6 Society and Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion.

    4. Understand the overlapping concepts operating within Society and Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion curricula.

    5. Interpret, analyse and discuss current issues and trends related to the teaching of Society and Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion in schools.


    Content

    • The role and value of studying Society & Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion in contemporary society and the broader school curriculum; their place within the NSW K-12 HSIE learning continuum; and contribution to civics and citizenship education.
    • Principles and practices of teaching and learning Society & Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion in New South Wales schools.
    • Lesson planning and programming for Stage 6 Society & Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion.
    • Course and assessment requirements of the NSW Higher School Certificate for Stage 6 Society & Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion.
    • Social Research Methods
    • Strategies, technologies and resources for teaching and assessing Stage 6 Society & Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion.
    • Protocols for working with Indigenous Communities; Intercultural communication issues; Consideration of Local, National and Global Perspectives on Indigenous Issues.
    • Current issues and trends related to the teaching of Society & Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion in schools.
    • The overlapping concepts operating within Society & Culture, Aboriginal Studies, and Studies of Religion curricula, including: Culture, Identity, Belief, Tradition, & Authority.
