This course offers an introduction to educational research with a view to developing an understanding of different approaches and methods currently used and the capacity to critically evaluate designs and outcomes.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Understand competing traditions in educational research and the implications for appropriate criteria for validity.

2. Understand the key features of major research methods in Education.

3. Critically evaluate research designs and research findings.


This course introduces students to:

  1. Research aspects of teachers' work.
  2. Competing philosophical traditions in Educational Research.
  3. Quantitative, qualitative & mixed research methods and design & analysis decisions consequent on researcher choice of method.
  4. Critical evaluation of research findings.
  5. Introduction to basic statistics and their interpretation.
  6. Critical analysis of the interaction between "evidence based practice" and educational policy making.


To enrol in this course, students must meet the teacher education admission milestones, if commencing a teaching program from commencement of 2016.

Enrolment in this course is dependent on meeting the teacher education admission milestone of successful completion of - Three HSC band 5s (including one in English) or - 80 units of UoN courses or - Regulatory authority approved comparable pathways or - Commencement in the program pre 2016
