This course is concerned with advanced topics in particle processing, especially in relation to the coal and minerals industries. Following a general introduction to mineral processing, particle characterisation and particle-fluid interactions, the course provides a flux curve treatment of gravity separation, flotation and thickening circuits. Students gain a unique and fundamental appreciation of the governing principles.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. To provide students with an appreciation of the physical science involved in the processing of particles in the coal and minerals industries, and

2. To provide students with an advanced understanding of the fundamental principles of processing particles

  • Segregation and Dispersion in Fluidization
  • Particle Fractionation, grade recovery / washability
  • Application of theory to gravity concentration devices (e.g. dense medium, cyclones, spirals, fluidized bed systems and enhanced gravity).
  • Bubble-particle interactions
  • Drift flux theory, as applied to flotation
  • Hydrodynamics of two-phase systems
  • Introduction to the Kinetics & Chemistry of flotation
  • Appreciation of how these principles affect the standard plant designs in coal and mineral processing circuits.
