Studied in conjunction with AHIS4160, which together comprise the thesis component of Honours.

For full-time students, AHIS4160 and AHIS4170 are usually to be taken concurrently (part-time students should complete AHIS4160 before AHIS4170).

AHIS4170 is concerned with developing the skills to write a thesis (of approximately 15,000 words) and culminates in the production of a thesis.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Identify an important problem or series of inter-related problems from the selected field of study.

2. Identify, examine and discuss the main evidence underpinning the problem/s identified in the field of study

3. Construct a lengthy argument or a number of arguments to address a problem or series of inter-related problems

4. Use the relevant modern literature in the field to enhance arguments concerning the evidence

5. Explain the problem/s to others in both written and oral form.

6. Complete a thesis (ca 15,000 words) within the given time


Having done preliminary preparation in AHIS4160 (determination of a field of study, a literature review and a bibliography), students will focus on a specific topic for their thesis

Students will produce a draft of their thesis by Week Ten.

Students will give a presentation on one aspect of their thesis in Week Ten or Eleven.

AHIS4160 and AHIS4170 together form the thesis, and they have the same objectives.


To enrol into this course students must be active in the following programs:

- Bachelor of Arts (Honours) [10214], or

- Bachelor of Arts (Honours) [40209].

Assumed knowledge

Students should have completed AHIS4140 and AHIS4150 and be taking AHIS4160 concurrently (part-time students will have completed AHIS4160).
