Staff Giving Committee
A group of staff volunteers who are passionate about encouraging our staff to give through the University to support our talented students facing hardships, and our innovative researchers. The group informs, develops and executes the staff giving fundraising strategy across UON:
- Committee Ambassadors play a lead role in the strategic planning, execution and championing of staff giving and fundraising activities
- Committee Champions lead the execution of the staff engagement and fundraising activities

Staff Giving Committee Ambassadors
Tina Crawford, Deputy Director, Workforce Strategy and Transformation
As an experienced human resources professional, Tina plays a crucial role in engaging the University's staff across all aspects of employment. She motivates our staff to play a part in shaping the futures of the University's students and researchers; she’s particularly inspired by the power of fundraising and how it can bring staff across a large institution together for a common goal. In her role, Tina has a particular interest in linking staff engagement with fundraising opportunities to support this program and build a sense of community.
Rebecca Hazell, Director of Advancement
Rebecca joined the University of Newcastle in 2013 to lead philanthropy and now leads our Office of Alumni & Philanthropy. She is passionate about building a culture of philanthropy within our university and engaging our alumni in a meaningful way. Rebecca brings to the Staff Giving Committee 20 years’ dynamic experience in philanthropy and the practice of advancement to the Staff Giving Committee. She played a role in developing QUT’s sector-leading staff giving program while in a leadership role there and is keen to be part of the team developing the University of Newcastle's program to become the new sector leader! Rebecca is a payroll donor to the UON Endowment Fund and also donates to the University’s biannual appeals supporting the Shaping Futures Scholarships Fund.
Professor Brett Ninness, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engineering and Built Environment)
Brett has received global recognition for his work in the advancement and application of engineering, resulting in a significant impact on society. As a dedicated educator and research supervisor, Brett has experienced how scholarships can positively impact the lives his PhD students. Brett says, “It’s a wonderful feeling, as a staff member knowing you’ve helped make a dedicated research student’s life easier through one of their toughest times.” As part of the University’s 50th celebrations in 2015, Brett supported his colleagues in their Great Wall of China challenge.
