What do you do when you suddenly find the trajectory of your life has swerved in a completely different direction?
Living on the other side of the world, single and working long hours and late nights as a chef, falling pregnant was not in Olivia’s short-term plans. About to embark on her new role as a single mum, she realised her existing role, her career as a chef, was not a viable option anymore.
“When my daughter, Ava, came along, I just knew that being able to balance family life, and the requirements of being a single parent, with the hours that I was working as a chef was not going to be possible,” said Olivia.
Moving home to Australia Olivia embraced the opportunity of finding a new career and realising her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. But full-time study is not an easy path to follow when you have a young child to care for.
“I’ve always had a passion for learning, and the privilege of being able to foster that in the next generation of students, by becoming a teacher, is something that really excited me. However, the prospect of studying with a young child was daunting, financially, and in terms of managing my study load.”
Heavily reliant on childcare to allow her to attend class and have the time she needs to be able to keep up with her studies, the financial strain of this expense weighed heavily on Olivia. Receiving a Shaping Futures Scholarship made all the difference, relieving financial pressure and allowing her to fully immerse herself in her studies.
“It’s tough raising a child on your own but I want to show my daughter that you can achieve your goals if you work hard enough. I want to be a role model to not only her, but my future students.”
