'Wine and Tourism’ integral in educating and supporting engagement with China
The 2019 Newcastle China Week delivered an exciting two-day program which explored the theme of ‘Wine, Tourism and Connectivity’.
The 2019 Newcastle China Week is a high profile and effective platform to showcase the University’s capacity to engage with the community. Part of our mission is to support social cohesion, strengthen the region’s international connectivity and offer new, educational experiences to the community - and China Week perfectly reflects this mission at work.
The China Business Forum was held on Friday 6 September at Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort, which set the scene for the discussions around China’s surge for Australian Wine demands and the Chinese tourism boom. The forum was attended by over 80 senior and high calibre academic, government and industry leaders, and businesses.
The China Cultural Festival held on Oval 4 at Callaghan Campus, University of Newcastle was opened by Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, Vice-Chancellor and President, The University of Newcastle, and Councillor Declan Clause, Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Newcastle. The Festival aims to celebrate cultural diversity and inclusiveness while offering a fun-filled day to engage with students and welcome the community to the campus.

‘Wine and Tourism’ Business Forum on Friday, 6 September, 2019
The Business Forum delivered industry led insights and expertise that facilitated greater discussion around Australian Wine and tourism. The forum attracted high calibre speakers from the University of Newcastle, Invest Hong Kong, Hong Kong Trade and Development Council, Department of Treasury (Export Advisor - NSW Government), Newcastle Airport, Tamburlaine Organic Wine and Wine Australia. The topics included Wine tourism marketing, consumer trends and cultural intelligence, Hong Kong as a commercial hub for F&B and beyond and useful tips of doing business in China for wine export and the wine tourism industry. Attendees were treated to a gourmet food and wine pairing with 2018 MasterChef top 6 contestant, Reece Hignell, who showcased our local Hunter Valley produce and wine.

Cultural Festival on Saturday, 7 September 2019
This year’s Cultural Festival took place in the beautiful bush campus in Callaghan at the University of Newcastle. It celebrated the contemporary and traditional Chinese culture, food, art, lion and dragon dances, Ninja Warrior workshop, live music performances, interactive displays, food markets, wine tasting and demonstrations. The University of Newcastle IT Innovation Team were on site to showcase their VR walkthrough of the Historical Victoria Theatre in Newcastle to our students, alumni, industry partners, staff and the local community. The festival provided a platform to celebrate inclusion and cultural diversity whilst engaging with our students and community.
