Volunteering at elderly people’s charity night
On 9 September 2016, various members of UON’s Hong Kong Alumni Chapter volunteered at a charity night at the Sham Shui Po Community Center to celebrate with 250 elderly citizens. This charity event was called
月滿愛心中秋夜 (Mid-Autumn Festival filled with love) and organised by four local charities.
Everyone enjoyed the performances including a magic show, singers and dancers. It was lovely to see the elderly receive a ‘lucky bag’ which contained mooncakes, rice, fruits and gifts. They all left the Community Centre happy.
The efforts of UON’s Hong Kong Alumni Chapter was truly appreciated and it was great to see other members of their families become involved as volunteers also. We can all be proud to have provided the care and love that many of our elderly citizens needed that night.
The Chapter will continue to serve the community and to render support to the needy. We hope more volunteers can participate in the next charity event.
Let’s continue to work together to do great things, UON Hong Kong Alumni Chapter!
Visiting the Fire and Ambulance Services Education Centre and Museum (FASECM)
The UON HK Alumni Chapter and Hong Kong People Management Association Limited jointly visited the Fire and Ambulance Services Education Centre and Museum on Saturday 24 September 2016.
The Education Centre aims to promote public education on fire safety and ambulance knowledge with various interactive and multimedia information facilities. The Museum offers a glimpse into the history and development of the Hong Kong Fire Services Department through its vast collection of exhibits.
The informative tour started at the Museum with brief introduction about fire services and ambulance facilities, firefighter and ambulance personnel uniform and historical information. The Museum displays include historical fire-fighting equipment, currently used ambulance car and equipment as well as rescue devices. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was explained by a video and gave us a better understanding of how to preform CPR on patients. Each display was comprehensive and approachable with a bi-lingual explanation.
We were then shown around the Education Centre and saw the firefighter’s assembly place, fire drill playground and fire drill simulations including an airplane, collapsed building, residential apartment and shipyard. These fire drill stations provide firefighters a place to practice, ensuring they can handle real time accidents more efficiently and effectively.
Through this tour, we became more appreciative of firefighters and ambulance officers because of their professionalism and ongoing commitment to helping the wider Hong Kong community. This visit was very insightful and increased our understanding of their duties. We can rest assure that we have first-rate firefighters and ambulance officers in Hong Kong, who were fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and are professionally qualified to deal with any hazards or accidents that may arise.
