Peter Tilley Seeing the Shadow21 March - 14 April 2018Please join the artist for the exhibition launch: Saturday 24 MARCH 2018, from 3PMTHE UNIVERSITY GALLERYThe elusive, insubstantial nature of the shadow lends itself to metaphor, myth and legend, with its signi cance contemplated by human consciousness throughout history. Shadows appear as essences of the soul – the externalisation of the inner self – as guides or advisors. In Jungian psychology, shadows contain parts of ourselves that are suppressed, denied, or unfavourable. For his PhD research, Peter Tilley examines the theory and philosophy of shadow, developing and utilising an array of materials, found objects, symbols and methods that enable the construction of shadows to visually or symbolically disclose fundamental traits and mnemonics of the ‘casting’ figure. The resulting sculptures become complex representations that explore illusions of certainty, memory and imagination – the mysteries of the unknown – and the fundamental identity and attributes of the figure/self. University of Newcastle Architecture students graduating from a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) will reveal their visions of ‘living in the city’ in an exhibition opening this evening at Watt Space.

Dreams of urban transformation have inspired the University of Newcastle (UON)’s third-year Architecture program students to develop concepts for Newcastle’s former heavy rail corridor.

The University of Newcastle (UON)’s Watt Space gallery has taken out the prestigious Blacket prize, which recognises the best architectural projects in regional NSW.

Newcastle can lay claim to another intriguing water themed enigma following the creation of a hidden pool amidst its CBD skyline.

More than 350 people gathered at the University of Newcastle (UON) Great Hall this evening to celebrate the 2015 Alumni Awards, hosted by comedian and UON graduate John Doyle, also known as 'Rampaging Roy Slaven'.

On October 22 the University of Newcastle (UON) will honour a generous group of Singapore alumni who have donated more than $900,000 to fund multiple scholarships to support UON students in the last seven years.
