Simply Cups - Coffee Cup recycling program

Simply cups recycling program

A recent University audit found that coffee cups account for 3% of general waste and 2% of recycling. Through implementing a range of waste recycling programs, we are aiming to increase our campus waste recycling target of 70% by 2021 as set out in our Environmental Sustainability Plan 2019-25.

The best and most sustainable option for your daily caffeine dose is to bring your own cup but we understand that sometimes that does not always happen.

The University is collaborating with Simply Cups to recycle disposable coffee cups, diverting them from landfill. These recycled cups are then used to make reusable coffee cups – the rCup – a world first reusable coffee cup made from recycled coffee cups, as well as a range of other products.

The coffee cup recycling stations are located in the Hunter Building (on the concourse near the retail outlets) and Shortland Building (near Gloria Jeans) at Callaghan and in New Space (ground floor near retail outlet). Click the map for locations.

Not near a Simply Cup recycling station when you finish your coffee? – that’s OK, if you can’t take it back, separate your cup and lid. Put the lid in the yellow recycling bin and the cup in the red landfill bin. That way you are recycling the lid and not contaminating the recycling waste with a cup that cannot be recycled.

Better still….bring your own cup and receive a discount on your coffee from many of our retailers on campus.
