Staff sneak peek
The UON was proud to showcase the iconic NeW Space to staff last week in an exclusive sneak peek. While we were still completing the finishing touches, cleaning and placing furniture we had over 450 people visit and have a look around at the building.
Supported with great coffee and cake from our new café operator, Fast Fuel Food, staff were able to wander around the eight floors and enjoy the amazing teaching and collaborative spaces inside and take in the breathtaking views. Check out what our staff had to say about NeW Space coming in for the first time below.
After months of careful planning, over the weekend an army of people were involved in moving over 2,850 boxes from Callaghan to New Space ready for staff to unpack their desks. They disconnected packed, moved and reconnected over 300 individual computers and phones and moved over 6,000 books into the new library and placing them on the shelves in the correct classification sequence. As of this week, staff from the Faculty of Business and Law, School of Creative Industries, Library, Student Support and others will now have NeW Space their new workspace.
We are also very excited to announce that due to the overwhelming response to our staff sneak peek we are providing another opportunity for those who were unable to make it on Friday. Come along for your exclusive last chance to view NeW Space and have a look around before we open to the public.
NeW Space is a place to enjoyed and accessed by all – our students, our staff, business and our community and we are enormously proud to share this iconic building with you.

What's your first impression of NeW Space?
UON staff share their thoughts.
Daan Schiebaan, Infrastructure and Facilities Services
I think NeW Space is a wonderful facility with amazing views, I think we’re really lucky to have a place like this for the University right in the centre of town, I think it’s going to do the whole city a lot of good. In terms of the buildings we have in Newcastle, it’s very sustainable designed. I think for where we’re at, as a facility it has some wonderful sustainability initiatives, it’s a 5 star green star design so all the principles and intent was there to build a really sustainable building.
Dr Deborah Donnelly, School of Education
Fantastic teaching spaces, fantastic views of Newcastle that we’ve never seen before. The technology is incredibly impressive. When’s the School of Education moving!?
Peter Hill, English Language and Foundation Studies | School of Education
It’s well designed, I like the fact the teaching spaces are on the outside and there is a variety of them. Lots of technology, visually appealing. Great use of colour and the sense of space inside is brilliant. The views are obviously just incredible.
Jo Midwinter, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment
I think NeW Space is lovely. Fantastic views, beautiful spot, and it really showcases the city well.
Kelly Papasavva, Office - DVC (Research and Innovation)
I think NeW Space is absolutely stunning, they’ve done such an incredible job. If this is not inspiration to get you to the University of Newcastle then nothing is, it’s gorgeous.
Ian Powell, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment
Fabulous view, I’ve only done a couple of floors but it looks modern and interesting.
Cassie Fitzpatrick, Human Resource Services
I think it’s a very open and engaging space, there’s lots of natural light, it’s a place where people can collaborate and work together. It’s architecturally amazing and so different to what we have at Callaghan, it’s beautiful to see UON doing something outside the box.
Bettina Mihalas, Faculty of Science
I’m so jealous, I wish I could live here!
Nathan Hawkins, Office of Alumni and Philanthropy
It’s a pretty incredible icon in Newcastle, I particularly love how much glass there is and there’s a view of Newcastle from every window.
Caitlin Chambers, Faculty of Science
It’s absolutely beautiful, it’s has amazing views of the Newcastle harbour.
Hugh Gordon, Student Central
Fantastic, I think it’s really exciting that the University has a big presence in the city.
