2019 Fiji Event
Fiji Science & Engineering Challenge: Suva, 12-13 November 2019
This two-day event in Fiji was a unique opportunity to bring the program to the Pacific Islands for the first time and excite young people about STEM! Fiji's SEC was a collaborative effort between the University of Newcastle (UON), Fijian Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts (MEHA), and Fiji National University (FNU).
In total, 580 students, teachers, staff, volunteers, and VIPs attended the Science and Engineering Challenge over two days at Vodafone Arena, Suva. Eight schools attended each day and of the 417 students, 50% were female.
The Fijian Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Hon. Rosy Akbar officiated the event and judged student-made bridges alongside:
- Ms Susan Kiran, Acting Permanent Secretary for Education
- Prof. Mohini Singh, Acting Vice-Chancellor of FNU
- Prof. James (Jim) Pounder Pro-Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching
- Mr Salabagi Mavoa, Dean of College of Engineering, Science And Technology, FNU
On Tuesday's Discovery Day, Vashist Muni Memorial Primary School were the winners! 
On Wednesday's Challenge, Suva Muslim College earned the trophy after a tie in the bridge-test.
The SEC was delighted with the school engagement and partnership between the Fijian Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts; Fiji National University; and the University of Newcastle for this pilot program. After 20 years of the Science and Engineering Challenge operating in Australia, the two-day event in Fiji exhibits the continuing need for increased STEM initiatives internationally. We will continue to collaborate with international partners with a shared aim to increase young people's interest and uptake of STEM careers.
