The University of Newcastle, Australia

High school students

We are inviting young women in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 studying or interested in commerce, economics, business, entrepreneurship or legal studies to participate in the 2018 Empower Network.

The Network aims to inspire and motivate young women about the education and career opportunities available in business, commerce, entrepreneurship, and law. The Network also aims to provide you with experiences and skills to enable you to make informed decisions regarding your work futures, at a pivotal time in the ‘school to work’ process. Through the network, you will get to meet with local industry professionals and university students who will share their experiences and their career journeys with you.

Why participate in the Empower Network?

You will:

  • Connect with current women university students and industry professionals through the dedicated online space and through school and university campus visits;
  • Develop an understanding of what it is like to study at university – including visiting our campuses;
  • Be aware of the study and career options available to you in the area of Business and Law
  • Learn about the world of work;
  • Develop skills to help in planning for your career and future.

As a High School Student member of the EMPOWER Network you have the option to:

  • Provide a profile for the Empower social network and participate in the social network (consisting of high school and university students and other industry professionals)
  • Participate in the schools component of the program
    • This includes attendance to on-campus events held at the university;
    • Bring your family members along to our Open Day and Insight evening events;
    • Actively participate at in-school sessions led by university students;
    • Actively participate in activities related to the network organised by the school.

The Empower Program – 2017, was an experience that transformed my university experience. Having gone to a regional high school myself, I believe this is a wonderful opportunity for young women in high school who are willing to prepare for their future, to get involved, meet people and realise that they can be empowered.

The highlight of the program for myself, was at the finale event where I spoke with high school students and industry professionals, and hearing that the high school students felt so comfortable to ask questions and that they enjoyed their visit to the university.
