Important Information for Conference Attendees


Newcastle is an easy place to navigate. There are two major roads that lead into the city - the M1 and Pacific Highway - and with a regional airport (Newcastle Airport) located just 20 minutes’ drive from the CBD, and bus, train and taxi services throughout the city, travel in and around Newcastle is stress free. Below are some tools to help you navigate your way, plus some numbers you can call for transport related information.


By plane

The closest airports to the conference are Newcastle Airport at Williamtown (a 25-minute drive north of Newcastle) or Sydney Airport.

If you are landing at Newcastle Airport

Port Stephens Coaches runs buses between the airport and the bus terminal next in Newcastle.

By car

You might like to hire a car from Sydney (and easy 2.5 hour drive) or Newcastle Airport (25 min drive) to make your way into the city. You will find car rental companies at both airports and throughout the city. Some of the options include EuropcarHertzBudget Car and Truck RentalVroom Vroom Vroom or Newcastle Car or Truck Rental.

By train

If you are landing in Sydney Airport one way to make your way to Newcastle is by train. Sit back and relax by riding the rails to the Wickham interchange (at the edge of the CDB), with connecting shuttle buses to central Newcastle and beaches until the light rail is installed (watch this space). From Sydney, catch one of the regular Newcastle and Central Coast services departing from Central Station. State of NSW uses a pre-paid Opal card system for Newcastle's local buses. Newcastle is Australia's eighth largest city but its streets are easily negotiated, and while just about everything in the CBD is easy walking distance from the conference venue, you might like to think about your transport options

By bus

NeW Space is located on the bus route and has a bus stop located nearby on King Street.  Trips taken within a designated area of Newcastle's CBD are free on State Transit-operated bus services. Should you have to pay the State of NSW uses a pre-paid Opal card system for Newcastle's local buses, these cards are free and you just pre-load credit onto them.  For more information visit

By bike

Bike hire is easy in Newcastle and is a pleasant, enjoyable and convenient way to explore the city. Visit The Maritime Centre (3 Honeysuckle Drive, Newcastle) or Crowne Plaza Newcastle (Corner of Merewether Street and Wharf Road, Newcastle) to hire a Spinway bicycle for up to 24 hours.

Bikes can be hired through the electronic kiosk at the bicycle bay via credit card payment, and helmets can be collected or returned through staff at The Maritime Centre or Crowne Plaza Newcastle. For more information on Spinway bicycle hire visit

For an alternative (and peddle free) option try an electric bike. Newcastle Electric Bikes offer single or tandem electric bike hire for up to 5 days and can even provide guided tours if desired.

On foot

Newcastle is a very walkable city, with a range of scenic walking tracks in the city centre and suburbs of Newcastle. Some of the more popular walks include Bathers Way, stretching along the coastline from Newcastle Harbour to Merewether Beach.

The Newcastle East Heritage Walk takes visitors on an inner city jaunt to many of Newcastle's earliest buildings, including Christchurch Cathedral, Custom House, the Convict Lumberyard and Newcastle Ocean Baths.
