Marketing Discipline Advisory Board
The discipline of marketing’s External Advisory Board (EAB) is situated within the Faculty of Business and Law. The EAB is designed to bring members of the marketing academic discipline together with industry professionals engaged in the practice of marketing to shape the development of the marketing curriculum and enhance the student learning experience. EAB members are senior leaders in the marketing profession and are drawn from a diverse range of profit and non-profit industries with significant marketing responsibility to represent the many aspects of the marketing profession.
Areas of focus for the board include:
- advise and inform course content of marketing programs, including new courses,
- advise on embedding relevant marketing-related skills into course work,
- advise on opportunities for site visits and work integrated learning through their professional networks,
- provide input and contribution to special initiatives that enrich the marketing student experience and their professional development,
- assist in the promotion of closer relationships between the University, industry and wider community,
- assist in development of research partnerships and industry collaborations to advance marketing knowledge
Joel is a marketing professional with 20 years’ experience. He holds a Bachelor and Masters degrees in Marketing and has lectured in postgraduate marketing at various Universities. Joel is Head of Marketing for Inspirations Paint, the largest network of paint stores in the country, supplying one in every six litres of paint in Australia.
Over the course of his career, Joel's primary focus has been in B2C retail marketing in the entertainment and home improvement sectors. He has consulted to a myriad of businesses in industries as diverse as; wine, building supplies, sport, training and education, manufacturing and fitness industries. Joel is a Certified Practicing Marketer with the Australian Marketing Institute and sat on the AMI NSW Council for many years.
The Wests Group / Newcastle Knights
Clair is Head of Marketing for The Wests Group Australia with a portfolio of brands which include Wests New Lambton, Wests Mayfield, Wests Cardiff, Wests City and Wests Nelson Bay, Balance Collective health clubs, The Anchorage Hotel | Spa Port Stephens, The Executive Inn Newcastle, The Gateway Inn Newcastle, Newcastle Exhibition & Convention Centre (NEX) and The Newcastle Knights.
After completing a Bachelor of Management in Marketing and Human Resources at the University of Newcastle, Clair joined Citta Property Group as their Sales & Marketing Manager overseeing project marketing for Pacific Dunes – Port Stephens; a $180M master planned residential and golfing development. Following this, Clair pursued her love of marketing and property to a role with integrated real estate group Mirvac as Sales & Marketing Manager; managing their hunter region residential property portfolio including The Royal Newcastle Beach, Magenta Shores, Hidden Waters Fletcher and Saddlers Ridge Gillieston Heights.
Pete is the Executive Director of Enigma, Newcastle’s largest and most well-known creative agency which in 2017 was ranked in the top 50 creative agencies in Australia. Pete started his career at public affairs consultancy, Haystac in Melbourne before returning to his home town Newcastle to join Peach Advertising for 5 years before returning to Melbourne to work with global agencies J. Walter Thompson and Clemenger BBDO where he led iconic campaigns for Ford, Cancer Council, Carlton & United Breweries, Four’n Twenty and the Australian Government.
Pete has studied at Swinburne University and is an alumni of STW’s emerging leaders program and JWT’s Global Leaders Circle. Pete currently sits on the External Advisory Board for Newcastle University’s business faculty (marketing) and is a board director of Mercy Services. He lives in Newcastle with his wife, Natalie, their three kids and three chooks. He is passionate about the local community and outdoor adventure.
Sarah Dennis has over 25 years practical marketing experience across a broad range of industries. Her experience extends from business to business marketing to FMCG brand marketing into the not for profit sector. Sarah has worked for organisations including Amcor, Interface, Wolters Kluwer, Masterfoods, Bluetongue Brewery, Coca-Cola, SABMiller and Staples. For the past 4 years, Sarah has been the Managing Director of the full service marketing agency, Fresh Marketing, based in Newcastle and working with a range of organisations locally, nationally and internationally.
Sarah Dennis holds a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) from the University of Newcastle.
Matthew is an innovative professional with a creative flair, with two decades of diverse marketing experience. He has worked in the advertising industry both in Australia and the UK, in television and print media, and for the last 10 years in senior management roles in Marketing in the financial services industry.
When he is not at work he’s playing soccer with his 3 daughters, finalising the plans to their dream home with his wife, and if time allows in the surf somewhere in Newcastle.
Sally is a senior marketing executive with extensive experience in the industrial sector. She has an impressive record of delivering sustainable business growth and driving profitability as a leadership team member of Liberty OneSteel. With extensive experience leading senior teams across marketing, sales, product and innovation disciplines, Sally is able to match her exceptional leadership qualities with an impressive depth of knowledge and insight across macro-economic and micro-environmental drivers to develop, lead and deliver game-changing business transformation and strategic growth programmes.
Sally is a proven and trusted executive, with extensive expertise in business strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial and financial planning and management. She is highly skilled at identifying opportunities and aligning business, marketing and sales strategies. With her extensive people leadership skills, Sally is focused on building the capability of her team, ensuring people, roles and responsibilities are aligned, sharing her commitment to delivering on businesses strategies and developing new ways of creating energising customer and employee experiences.
She is highly educated, with Master of Business (University of Newcastle, 2010) and Master of Marketing degrees. (University of Newcastle, 2003).
Westpac Rescue Helicopter
The “Community’s Own” Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service undertakes aeromedical rescue, search and inter-hospital transfers 24-7 throughout Northern NSW. James is a member of the Senior Management Team and along with his team, is responsible for the function of Marketing, Media and Community Partnerships. These partnerships include sponsors, government, volunteers and community fundraising. Before working with the Service, James spent eight years at Orica as Global Marketing Communications Manager, a role that included the customer insights & loyalty program.
His first job after graduating from Newcastle University was in a local design agency, a role that provided an excellent grounding across a number of sectors. James joined the External Advisory Board as a foundation member in March 2018.
nib Health Funds
Jessica currently holds the position of Group Acquisition Marketing Manager at nib health funds, one of Australia's fastest growing health funds with over one million customers across Australia and New Zealand. Jessica has more than 10 years' experience specialising in new customer acquisition, brand building, product development and strategic commercial partnerships with alliance companies including Qantas and Suncorp.
Jessica holds a Master of Business Administration, Master of Marketing (Merit), Graduate Certificate in Business Research and Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) through the University of Newcastle.
