University Council

The University of Newcastle is governed by its Council which is chaired by the Chancellor. Council has responsibility for managing the affairs and concerns of the University according to the University of Newcastle Act 1989 (NSW) (the Act) and the University of Newcastle By-law 2017 (NSW) (the By-law).

In July 2013, the University of Newcastle appointed Mr Paul Jeans as its seventh Chancellor. The Chancellor provides leadership and guidance to the Council and is responsible for ensuring that the Council fulfils its obligations.

Professor Alex Zelinsky AO

Vice-Chancellor and President - Professor Alex Zelinsky AO

Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, the University of Newcastle’s 8th Vice-Chancellor and President, commenced in the role on 19 November 2018. The Vice-Chancellor and President is the principal executive officer of the University and is responsible for the educational and administrative affairs of the University.

Executive Committee

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is the University's executive management team, responsible for providing advice to the Vice-Chancellor on matters of strategic and operational significance for the University.

Academic Senate

The Academic Senate is the principal advisory committee to the Council on academic matters and has the mission to protect, promote and enhance the excellence of the University's core academic activities - teaching, learning and research.
