Indigenous Cultural Competency: Our Way
The University of Newcastle has a nationally recognised history of achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. This includes success in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Medicine and the inclusion of a mandatory Aboriginal education component in teaching degree programs.
More recently, the University has extended its commitment to a "whole-of-university" engagement with Indigenous Collaboration featuring as a goal in the University of Newcastle Strategic Plan. Part of this commitment includes Indigenous Cultural Competency targets for staff and students.

The use of Our Way reflects the University of Newcastle's tradition of innovation in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and has been used in the title of the 1999 Healing Our Way CD ROM and as a philosophy for the activities in the Wollotuka Institute. It also attests to the importance of local priorities in Aboriginal and Torres islander perspectives.
This site will be a centralised data base for the Universities expanding response to the inclusion of Indigenous Cultural Competency. It contains elements suitable for student, staff and community reflection and development.
