Indigenous Employment

Overview

The NSW government expects that all employers will seek to ensure that EEO target groups are represented in staff profiles in the same proportions that they are present in the general community. The target for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is 2%.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 2.5% of staff of the University of Newcastle. Indigenous Australians are however concentrated in areas that provide services to Indigenous students eg Umulliko - the Department of Aboriginal Studies, and Wollotuka the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Centre.

It is the University's intention to assist Indigenous people to seek employment with the University, to support Indigenous members of staff, and to increase the number of Indigenous Australians working within the University. To achieve this, it appointed an Indigenous Employment Co-ordinator.

The Indigenous Employment Strategy identifies the University's priorities in supporting the recruitment and training of Indigenous staff.

Activities in which the Indigenous Employment Co-ordinator is involved include:

  • liaison with local Indigenous communities;
  • delivery of the Cultural Awakening Training program in conjuction with Community participants;
  • referral for assistance in preparing job applications;
  • advice on recruitment strategies targeting Indigenous people;
  • development of employment opportunities targeting Indigenous applicants;
  • advice to management and staff on a range of employment related matters; and
  • supporting training and development opportunities for Indigenous staff.
