U-drive Service for Students

U: Beauty!!!

IT Services is providing all students with a User drive or U-drive that will greatly improve data storage and security.

What is a U-drive?

• A U-drive is a network drive for personal storage of course related data.

Where can I access my U-drive?

• Your U-drive is accessible from any PC or Mac in Computer Teaching Labs or General Access areas such as the Auchmuty, Huxley and Ourimbah Libraries and the Student Hubs located at the Callaghan and Ourimbah Campuses and the City Precinct.
• Your U: drive is NOT available from the University wireless network or from off Campus locations such as your home.

How do I access my U-drive?

Your U-drive will be automatically mapped when you log on to any of the lab or hub computers in the locations above.

• In Windows XP it will appear as "home on student (U:)" in My Computer
• In Mac OSX it will appear as an icon called 'HOME' on your desktop

How much data can I store?

• Your default quota on your U-drive is 500MB
• Requests for increase in U: drive quota should be made via your lecturer who will request a quota increase on behalf of your course.

Why should I use a U-drive?

There are two major advantages to storing data on your U:

• Files stored on your U-drive can be accessed from any student PC or Mac at Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses and the City Precinct.
  
• The Data Restore Facility - Snapshots of your data are taken twice a day using Microsoft's Volume Shadow Services (VSS) technology. If data is lost or deleted, you can recover it yourself within seven days using the self initiated restore feature available via VSS.
  *Note this facility not available from Macs

Keeping a backup copy of your important data

• It is your responsibility to keep a backup copy of any important data that you have stored on your U-drive.

Authorised Usage

By connecting to the University’s network you are accepting the University’s policies and guidelines on the use of the Internet and computing facilities.

Any inappropriate use of the network will be investigated and can result in disciplinary action and a range of penalties including suspension from a course of study, a fine, termination of employment, and/or criminal prosecution.
