Telephone Services

The University of Newcastle supports a number of telephone related services. Telephone systems are supported for the Callaghan campus (including the Newcastle CBD buildings - UniHouse, Conservatorium etc), Halls of Residence and the Ourimbah campus. The telephone system (or PABX) at the University of Newcastle is available for the use of staff and students at the discretion of individual Faculties and Divisions.

Calls directed outside the University required a "0" prefix to allow external access.

The switchboard can be contacted on x15000 (or 4921 5000 from outside the University).

About Telephone Services (Callaghan Campus)

Telephones are initially connected with STD access unless a letter/e-mail from the head of the organisational unit requests that they are changed to local or internal access only.

The telephone system provided by the University is for University business only. Anyone making private calls from the University telephone system may be asked to repay the cost of such calls.

Hours of Operation

The telephone (PABX) system is on-line 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with maintenance and system upgrades performed during low traffic periods (usually early morning). The system is connected to a battery backup and will be kept on-line for up to 4 hours in the event of a power outage.

The switchboard service is available from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on University working days.

Service Levels

Telephone faults are co-ordinated by the Infrastructure service group within IT Services, and serviced by an external contractor. Faults will be rectified as soon as possible, depending on the nature of the fault and the availability of the contractor. We will notify you of the expected resolution time.

The installation of a new extension is co-ordinated by the Infrastructure service group within IT Services and serviced by an external contractor. A request for a new telephone installation will normally be completed within 10 working days of receipt of an official request.

Programming changes to telephones will be done within 2 working days of receipt of an official request.
