University of Newcastle Software Licencing

The University of Newcastle has negotiated a number of software licence agreements with key software vendors to provide software products to the University community at the lowest possible cost.

IT Services manages the distribution of these licences as part of the Managed Operating Environment, maintaining software standards within the University, and satisfying vendor licence agreements.

Subject to the conditions of each agreement, software is available for installation on University owned computers, and in some cases, personal computers belonging to staff and students of the University of Newcastle.

Licences for University Owned Computers

Adobe and Microsoft Software Licences

A number of Adobe and Microsoft products are included on University computers supplied under the Managed Operating Environment. Additional licences may be purchased and installed on University owned computers with the appropriate delegated authority. The current version of software available to IT Services at the time of the order will be installed and no upgrades will be available unless a new licence is purchased.

Statistical Software Licences

Licences for SPSS, SAS, JMP and Minitab are available to Faculties and Units of the University of Newcastle at no cost; however a registered licence must be assigned to every computer on which the software is installed.
Statistical licence codes must be renewed on an annual basis to ensure continued availability of the product.

Conditions of Use
The installation of licenced software**:

• Must be on a University owned computer.
• All University licences are for educational/academic purposes and may not be used for external or commercial work
• The user applying for the licence must provide the Computer name of the computer on which the software is to be installed
• A separate licence number must be assigned for each computer on which the software is installed
• The software licence applies to the computer nominated, but may be transferred to another University computer by advising the 17triplezero IT Service Desk who will carry out the transfer and reissue a valid licence letter
• A licence letter for each software licence will be forwarded to the user requesting the licence. This is the user’s proof of purchase and should be kept in a safe place
• Licenced software is installed by a member of the IT Service Desk Team either by remote deployment or onsite visit
  **(except in the case of Groupwise, Endnote and Sophos)

Minimum System Requirements
The installation of any of the software licences listed above is reliant on the computer having the recommended minimum system requirements of the University.

Licences for Personal Computers

Downloadable Software for Staff and Students at No Cost

The University of Newcastle has provided zipped files, and in some cases, negotiated site licences for the following products. A site licence allows staff and students of the University to download the software on to their personal computer at no cost to the individual. A current Uni-ID/Student Number and password are required to download this software.

Software for Personal Computers for Staff and Students

Software for personal use may be purchased at reduced rates from outlets external to the University of Newcastle. Users should check prices and minimum configurations when purchasing from these outlets.
IT Services accepts no responsibility for software purchased from these outlets and advises that versions may not be compatible with versions of software installed on University owned lab and staff computers.
