Personal Computers for Staff Employed by the University of Newcastle

In accordance with the change management process, the University of Newcastle is moving to a Managed Operating Environment (MOE) for the supply and support of personal computers for staff.

University computing facilities must generally be used for business, academic or student related activities only. Users may only use authorised facilities for authorised purposes. For example, personal computers made available for staff should not be used for private use, eg personal music or video files etc.

Hardware and software computing environments at the University will be managed and delivered under a shared services model.

What are the benefits to the user?

Stable and Reliable Environment

Standardising on hardware and software means more thorough testing can be performed prior to release. Administration of user access to the desktop will help ensure speedy and consistent delivery of current operating systems and applications.

Fault Resolution

The use of remote control tools will assist IT Client Services with rapid and efficient diagnosis and resolution of faults. It is anticipated that resolution will occur at the first point of contact i.e. when the call is logged.

Software Delivery

IT Client services will be able to install tested software on your computer remotely. Software can then be managed to ensure that it less vulnerable to attacks from viruses whilst remaining current.

Workstation Imaging

Desktops PCs can be deployed quickly and work-ready, minimising the interruption to workflow.
