Taking the Corporate Global Challenge to the Library

More than 74 teams from the University are taking the Corporate Global Challenge which means over 500 staff are stepping out around the campus. But when it’s cold or wet outside enthusiasm can wane.  So when the weather gets nasty, why not head to your closest library for some extra steps?

With a total of more than 45 kilometres of shelving across all locations there are plenty of ways to up your step rate, but here’s the number of steps it takes to walk around your nearest library without even venturing into the shelves:

Auchmuty Library:  520 (Coffee shop to Roof Terrace and return)
Feature of the walk? Funky furniture, colourful mural and fake turf on the re-opened Roof Terrace

Ourimbah Library: 500 steps (Return circuit from front door.)
Feature of the walk? Great selection of new artwork near the upstairs group study rooms

Huxley Library: 380 (Front door, downstairs to HC118 and return)
Feature of the walk? The Indigenous Resource Collection

City Campus Library: 330 steps (Around the library and lap of first floor.)
Feature of the walk? The beautiful art-deco building

Sydney Library: 140 steps (Circuit)
Feature of the walk? City views from the 12th floor

Art Gallery: 200 steps (Circuit)
Feature of the walk? Images from the Pleasure Zones exhibition

Need some music to help you walk faster? Why not download some tunes from the hundreds of thousands of tracks available from Library music databases such as Contemporary World Music?

Want some extra weight bearing exercise along the way?  The average hardback weighs around 500g. (Of course, you could choose a heavy dictionary or some other monster from the collection.)

28 library staff – or nearly one third of Library staff are taking the challenge so you’re bound to find someone else stepping it out.

The Library also has plenty of books and DVDs to help you walk. Ask at any of the Information Desks for help finding resources on exercise, nutrition or travel, or to follow up on that burning question you’ve always wanted answered. If you need in-depth help with your research or PHD, then the library has Faculty Liaison Librarians who are research and information management specialists.

Alternatively you could forget the walking and curl up somewhere with a good book. With plenty of cosy spaces, wireless access and good coffee, your library is the place to be in winter.
