UoNalert - Are you registered to receive SMS alert warnings?
Focused on safety and security, the Vice-Chancellor has established the Emergency Planning Committee (EPC), responsible for coordinating the development, implementation and maintenance of the University’s emergency management plan. The EPC brings together expert and key stakeholder areas from across the University, and is chaired by the Chief Operating Officer, Dr Brok Glenn.
A current review of the University's emergency response procedures has identified valuable opportunities to enhance the University's emergency preparedness. The SMS facility, known as UoNalert, provides the capacity to communicate rapidly with large numbers of students and staff in the event of an emergency by way of bulk Short Message Service (SMS) messaging.
EPC member and Associate Director, IT Infrastructure Services, James Vidler, has noted poor staff take-up of UoNalert. "The figures have revealed less than one third of all UoN staff are registered to UoNalert," James explained. "This means if an evacuation is required valuable time will be lost trying to get the word out to staff."
