Encouraging new university students to engage and participate: can an online orientation help?
The University of Newcastle's online enabling program, Open Foundation by Distance, has been offered as a pathway into University since 2003. In recent years the program has been substantially redeveloped from paper-based to fully online, and a week-long online orientation, Week Zero, has been introduced as a key component of the program. Evaluative measures in 2012 and 2013 indicate that Week Zero has had a significant positive impact on student engagement and experience.
Liz Goode has coordinated support initiatives and course production in Open Foundation by Distance since early 2012, and led the team of academic and professional staff involved in the design and production of Week Zero. Come along to the next COI meeting to hear Liz talk about why Week Zero was developed; and how it has impacted students' transition to higher education.
