New Library Workforce Plan supports NeW Directions

The Library's staff are its most important asset. In response to the NeW Directions Future Workforce Plan, the Library has developed a Library Services Workforce Plan 2013-2015.  This plan will assist with the further development of career pathways and succession planning in a changing technological and pedagogical environment as well as provide new opportunities for skill development to ensure that our staff resources are clearly aligned with the strategic priorities of the University.

The Library Services Workforce Plan 2013-2015 has been developed in response to a range of drivers of change which have been considered in the context of the strategic objectives articulated in the University's Future Workforce Plan and relevant objectives in the other four plans comprising the University's NeW Directions Strategic Plan.

Key drivers for change in the collections and resources areas include an increasing demand for electronic resources and a 'just in time' rather than 'just in case' approach to collection development. Other challenges include the functional complexity of electronic resources (ebooks and ejournals),  assessment of  products and pricing to assess value and return on investment  and a shift in library resourcing from a focus on print collections to the acquisition, access and discovery of digital resources.

Drivers for change in service and facilities include: Increasing enrolments and more diversity of students, Supporting the University's position as a leader in enabling and indigenous programmes, Changes in pedagogy and an increase in online and blended learning and changes to the way students study and an increased demand for 'anytime anywhere' delivery of information

Strategies within the Workforce Plan concentrate on building capacity, capability and confidence within the staff by

  1. Reviewing staffing with consideration to changing roles and priorities
  2. Providing development opportunities and training to ensure all staff have the appropriate knowledge and skills for the Library to meet its strategic plan objectives
  3. Fostering a workplace culture that values and supports staff, and maintaining effective communication channels
