UoN welcomes our new Brazilian students
50 Brazilian students are currently studying ELICOS at UoN before undertaking a 1 year Study Abroad program as part of the Brazilian Science Without Borders (SWB) scholarship program. This is quite a coup for UoN, and is a direct result of the successful relationships established through both our visiting academics and the University's International Marketing team.
The Brazilian Science Without Borders program is a large-scale, nationwide scholarship program that is primarily funded by the Brazilian federal government. The program seeks to strengthen and expand Brazilian education in the areas of science, technology, innovation and competitiveness; by providing opportunities for international study to undergraduate and graduate students and researchers.
In November 2012, representatives from the Innovative Research Universities, including Dr Yuri Totoev and Ms Hayley McNeel from UoN, visited Brazilian institutions and presented to students interested in SWB scholarships, as well as students considering Australia as a destination for self-funded PGC/RHD opportunities.
The University community welcomes the new students from Brazil and looks forward to welcoming other SWB students in the future, including approximately 30 next semester.
UoN success in AsiaBound Grants Program
The Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIICCSRTE) has awarded the University of Newcastle (UoN) funding for student grants to totalling $310,000 under the inaugural Government's AsiaBound Grants Program.
All Faculties supported the International Office in the process of writing and submitting applications, which led to UoN receiving funding for 12 Projects. This equates to approximately 104 students who may ultimately study in Asia for part of their qualification.
Universities Australia is currently working on the development and implementation of the National Information and Promotions Strategy for the Australian Government's AsiaBound Grants Program. UoN will be hosting an institutional workshop on the grants program (and other Government grants), the changes to OS-HELP, and the benefits of participation in student mobility programs at 10 am on Thursday 5th September 2013.
