Have you had your flu vaccination this year? Hunter New England Health warned of a severe influenza (flu) season in 2013. Vaccination lowers the risk of getting flu - reducing the risk to yourself and others. Visit the University Health Service and speak to a nurse so we can arrange your FREE staff vaccination.

Zumba
Zumba Fitness is a global lifestyle brand that fuses fitness, entertainment and culture into an exhilarating dance-fitness.
Dates: Starting on Thursday 26 September for 8 weeks from 12 – 1 pm
Venue: The Forum, Nusport
Ergonomics and Massage
Ergonomic training teaches you the skills to set up your workstation correctly. Learn about the spine and why you experience neck and shoulder pain at your workstation. As a treat you can have a free 3 – 15 minute neck and shoulder massage during the course.

Tai Chi
Research indicates that attention to physical fitness enhances mental agility. We also become less stressed and cope better with problems. This 6 day program of Tai Chi - Qigong is aimed at beginners. Beginners are first taught Shabashi 1 & 2, sets of 18 exercises each & the foundation of the tai chi form. From these beginnings you learn all 108 movements of the Khor Yang Style Tai Chi Form over 6 terms as well as specialised Qigong exercises.

CPR/EAR Refresher
The two-hour workshop is a refresher course for staff that hold a current CPR or First Aid Training Certificate. So what would you do if you encountered a conscious or unconscious casualty, were confronted with an accident scene or you needed to perform Expired Air Resuscitation (EAR) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)?
If you can't answer all these questions and would like to know the basic principles of EAR and CPR, please enrol in this session. Staff of the Royal Life Saving Society leads this workshop: First Aid courses may also be arranged through St John NSW if current dates are not suitable.

Evacuation Warden Training
This course is a combined course that provides information and practical exercises in the management of The University's Emergency Evacuation System. It is designed for Evacuation Wardens and includes the basic information that wardens require to understand the reasons and methods of evacuating University Buildings and enable wardens to make an informed decision as to the most appropriate response to an emergency situation, as well as practical exercises in extinguishing small fires. The course is in conjunction with The University of Newcastle - Evacuation Warden Procedures, and Warden Evacuation Procedures for respective buildings.

Manual Handling
This training will cover Manual Handling specific to sustained / static duties in addition to dynamic posture control during lifting. Any other specific manual handling duties for individuals can be discussed on the day. The handout with pause exercises related to certain tasks (especially repetitive and sedentary tasks) will be beneficial.

Safety Awareness/Aggression Minimisation
This safety training includes techniques to identify and diffuse possible violent situations and covers many activities including researchers conducting home visits as part of their research and staff working in student accommodation: It is suitable for anyone who may potentially be exposed to situations where safety awareness and knowledge of aggression minimisation techniques would be advantageous.

X-ray Safety for Unlicensed Users of X-ray equipment
This full day session is run by Bill Bartolo, Bartolo Safety Management Service, the University Radiation Safety Advisor and is provided for unlicensed staff and students working with x-ray equipment under Supervision. The session will provide an update on current legislated requirements for operating x-ray equipment focusing on safety.

Radiation Safety (HMRI – 1.5 days)
This course covers Radiation Safety training in the Laboratory, Theory (Day 1) and Practical for staff/post grads using unsealed sources only (Day 2).
Participants need to bring pen and paper, calculator, lab coat (Day 2), fully enclosed shoes (Day 2) and eye protection (safety glasses) (Day 2).
Participants who pass the theory component can apply to the Office of Environment and Heritage for a licence to use ionising radiation apparatus and/or radioactive substances.

Managing Menopause
Our presenter for this course is Dr Carolyn Hackworthy from the University Health Service, who has a specific interest in women's health. The course covers management of menopause symptoms, diet and exercise tips and available treatment. There will be plenty of time for questions so please come along and ask as much as you like.

Mindfulness Meditation
The expert staff from the University Counselling Service will lead these workshops which introduce participants to mindfulness meditation. Skills for developing mindful awareness will be taught and practiced. There will be opportunity to learn about the benefits of meditation for physical and mental well being.
