New hardware bundle options
IT Services regularly reviews the range of standard hardware configurations in the Computer Requisition System (CRQ) to ensure they meet the needs of most users. These configurations take into account travel, performance, budget, physical size and operating system.
The latest options include higher specification models at reduced prices. Two significant inclusions are the Dell OptiPlex 9010 All-In-One desktop which saves desktop space by including the hard drive in the monitor (similar to the iMac design), and the Dell XPS13 lightweight laptop, ideally suited to the frequent traveller.

Don’t be tempted
This year we will see the release of new operating systems from our major vendors. Apple has already released Mac OS X 10.8 or ‘Mountain Lion’ and Microsoft will release Windows 8 towards the end of the year.
Our current University standards are Mac OS X 10.7 and Windows 7.
Don’t be tempted to upgrade the operating system of your University-owned computer. IT Services makes this request for a number of reasons:
- Not all University applications will be compatible with these new operating systems and extensive testing must be undertaken
- Your desktop hardware may need to be upgraded to ensure these new operating systems function as expected
- Newly released operating systems often have bugs or glitches that may impair your productivity.
IT Services will provide documentation on our web site for both these new operating systems to assist students and visitors to connect to our wireless network.
Staff Email Project
As part of the 2012 Staff Email Project, which is responsible for moving staff email to another platform, an email policy review will be conducted in August and September. Updates regarding this project will be published in In the Loop.
