Living intercultural collaboration - China's gift to Newcastle stroke researchers
Stroke researchers in Newcastle have enjoyed a continued collaboration with colleagues in Harbin, China, looking at the therapeutic effects of cooling the brain after a stroke event. The teams are led by Professor Levi (Newcastle) and Professor Wang (Harbin). Professor Rostas had the privilege of delivering in person the gift of valuable brain imaging software to the Harbin researchers.
Last year a delegation from the Second Affiliated Hospital of the Harbin Medical University visited the Newcastle team to discuss further elements of their collaborative research. As personal gifts to Professor Levi and Professor Rostas, the Harbin researchers gave both remarkable poems carved in bamboo.
Professor Rostas' poem is a facsimile of a poem titled Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion by Wang Xizhi, a renowned poet and calligrapher of the Jin Dynasty (4th century AD). The original was buried with the second Emperor of the Tang Dynasty. A copy made during that Dynasty hangs in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
