Watch out - students about!

This time of year, when the bulk of our students return, is an opportunity for us all to slow down and think about the things we can do to ensure we all have a safe and happy 2012.

  1. Literally, 'Slow Down'. Especially when driving into, around, and leaving the campuses. At this time of year there are a number of new students who are unfamiliar with your campus and are trying to find their way with a million things on their mind. They are more likely to walk onto the roads or step out in front of a vehicle. Vehicle stopping distances increase dramatically with every extra 10 km/h.
  2. Be aware of, and reinforce to others, your responsibility to provide safety information to the students in our care, such as the need to evacuate buildings on the sounding of alarms, about reporting a hazard or a security issue. If you have students in your care, you have an increased responsibility for their safety and wellness.
  3. Take care of yourself. This time of year can require you to do many tasks that haven't been needed for a few months. Students and courses starting, questions asked and actions required. Don't forget to breathe. Take regular breaks and give yourself time to plan. A plan can help to organise your tasks and efficiency will follow.
