Staff celebrate a journey of discovery
In February this year, 35 UoN staff members from various areas of the University and at various stages in their careers, celebrated. Some received an accredited qualification, such as an Advanced Diploma of Management or Diploma of Management, others were rewarded for a significant step forward in their development.
What they all shared however was a journey of discovery, about self and others.
Anne Siegers, Associate Director - Risk and Assurance, says that while completing the Advance Diploma of Management with her team reinforced their strengths, it was also a process of learning about each other.
"Going through the process together helped us gain more understanding of each others skills and strengths, and contributed to even greater respect and trust within the team. It also showed me how well my team and I work together and support each other, " Anne said.
Others discovered the importance of building relationships with cohorts and how this can contribute to a sense of community. This was the case for Sally Patfield, Placement Officer in the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy, who completed the HEW 5 - 6 Development Program.
"Not only did I learn more about the University as a whole, I also developed a greater awareness of the different roles people have at the HEW 5 - 6 level. It gave me a chance to reflect on my own role and how I contribute to the University," Sally said. "I had the opportunity to sit down and think about my career, present and future, which I don't often get the chance to do."
Laurie Freeman, PMO Administrative Officer with IT Services, found the main benefit of undertaking the Diploma of Management was the discovery of how to think differently and take a more reflective and structured approach towards her work.
"I kept having these big ideas and was often making improvement suggestions...but these ideas were often left at that. The course showed me how to turn my ideas into professional plans. I no longer work reactively (and flustered), instead more proactively and feel a lot more in control," Laurie said.
Taking on new challenges and ideas can often be daunting. These staff members took on these challenges and discovered the personal rewards.
