YOUR CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Career Development Prospectus
The career, training and development opportunities outlined in this first iteration of your Career Development Prospectus are designed to assist the University of Newcastle’s staff to reach their full potential.
Providing world-class learning and development opportunities is critical to ensuring that our staff are well placed to meet the challenges of major sector transformation in the 21st century.
We urge everyone to take an active approach when considering training and development needs. Using the Performance Development Plan, introduced through the Performance Review and Development process, staff are able to map their career development path for each year with their supervisor. It is an opportunity for staff to reflect on their needs, as well as align individual capability and professional growth with the University’s Vision and strategic objectives.
Career Development Planning workshops
Career development and management is a lifelong process. We develop as individuals and face many unplanned events throughout our life. This workshop is an interactive one where participants explore their interests, strengths, values and skills and identify what is most important in relation to development of their career.
Developing effective job applications workshops
Developing effective job applications takes a lot of preparation. This workshop will take you through the elements of a cover letter and a resume and with guidance on how to respond to selection criteria effectively. The aim is to provide you with the skills to be able to critically analyse your own job applications.
One on one careers sessions
One on one careers sessions provide you with an opportunity to have a confidential discussion about your career with a qualified careers practitioner to help you decide want you would like to do next and to work out how you might get there.
The discussion may involve:
- Talking about your circumstances
- Reflecting on your background
- Helping you identify your skills, strengths and interests
- Helping you focus on what's important to you
- Identifying your options
- Suggesting ways of tackling obstacles
- Discussing job hunting strategies
- Helping you work out your next steps - action planning
