Short term appointments can cover full-time fixed term, part-time fixed term or casual staff but are usually for periods of up to 12 months (academic and research positions) and six months (for all other positions). Employment of Students - Please note that when employing a student an employer/employee relationship exists. To employ someone in a short term capacity you will need to ensure the following steps are taken:
| 1. | The Head of the Organisational Unit completes an Appointment - Job Details Form. It is important that the correct classification and salary step are entered on the form as the Finance Manager will base the commitment of funds on this information. Salary rates are available from the Remuneration and Benefits website. It is also important that the duties are listed if they have not already been provided. If you have any doubt about the classification and step of the proposed appointee please contact your Human Resource Officer. |
| 2. | The Head of the Organisational Unit approves the appointment (on the Appointment - Job Details Form). For academic appointments, the forms should then be sent to the PVC/Head of Division for final approval. (You will not be required to obtain PVC/Head of Division approval in the case of appointments made by grant holders.) |
| 3. | The form is passed to the appropriate Business Support Accountant for commitment of funds. The Business Support Accountant will forward the form to Human Resource Services. |

If this is a new appointment to the University, the following forms should be completed by the appointee and attached:
If the Appointment - Job Details Form is being completed as an extension/continuation of an existing employment agreement, then ONLY the Appointment - Job Details Form is required. |
| 5. | Casual Academic Staff - Appointment Letter All casual academic staff members shall receive an appointment letter produced and sent by the organisational unit. The letter and information on the appointment of casual academic staff is available from the Casual Appointment System. Please Note: Access to this web address is restricted to staff with user identification and a login. |
