Information About the Recruitment of Staff

PLEASE NOTE: At least one third of the members of all selection panels must be female. This may be achieved through seeking committee members who have relevant expertise from within the University or from relevant professional groups outside the University. For General Staff and Academic Levels A, B & C, it is the responsibility of the Chair of the panel to invite those listed below to be part of the panel.

Academic Staff Selection Panel

The Selection Panel comprises:

For a Professor

The Vice-Chancellor (Chair). The Vice-Chancellor may, in his absence, nominate the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) as Chair.

  • One of the following, by agreement after consultation:
    • The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)
    • The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)
  • The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the relevant Faculty
  • The Head of the relevant School/Academic Organisational Unit (AOU)
  • One academic staff member of the School/AOU elected by the academic staff members of that School/AOU
  • The President of Academic Senate**; or where the President of Academic Senate is unable to participate or does not wish to exercise the right to participate, the President of Academic Senate will nominate one Professor or Associate Professor
  • Up to two external scholars distinguished in their Discipline, appointed by the Vice-Chancellor
  • An extra member or members may be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor in special circumstances.

Total Membership: at least seven, possibly ten or eleven.

For Associate Professor
  • The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) (Chair)*
  • The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the relevant Faculty or Head of Division
  • The Head of the relevant School/AOU
  • The Deputy President, Academic Senate or where the Deputy President of Academic Senate is unable to participate or does not wish to exercise the right to participate, the Deputy President of Academic Senate will invite the Academic Senate to elect one Professor or Associate Professor
  • One member elected by and from the academic staff of the AOU concerned
  • Up to two external scholars distinguished in their Discipline, appointed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

* The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) may, in his absence, nominate the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) as Chair.

Total Membership: at least six, possibly seven.

For Senior Lecturer
  • Pro Vice-Chancellor of Faculty,
  • Head of School,
  • Academic staff member within the Discipline, and, a
  • Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor from another Faculty/School.

This is the optimal composition. Other members may be involved if necessary.

For Lecturer
  • Pro Vice-Chancellor of Faculty,
  • Head of School,
  • Academic staff member within the Discipline and a
  • Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor from another Faculty/School.

This is the optimal composition. Other members may be involved if necessary.

For Associate Lecturer
  • Pro Vice-Chancellor of Faculty,
  • Head of School,
  • Academic staff member within the Discipline and a
  • Academic staff member from another Faculty/School.

This is the optimal composition. Other members may be involved if necessary.

NOTES

  1. An appropriate representative from the University of New England must be included on Academic selection committees for appointments relating to the B.Med program.
  2. For Associate Lecturer, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer positions, an Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor can chair the Selection Committee providing they are not the Head of School for the Academic Organisational Unit where the appointment is to be made.

Drafting the Advertisement

HEW Levels
To determine the correct HEW Level of the position, the secondary descriptors should be consulted.

The salary rates should be consulted so that the current salary range for the HEW Level can be provided in the advertisement.

Academic Levels
To determine the correct Academic Level of the position, the Position Classification Standards should be consulted.

The salary rates should be consulted so that the current salary range for the Academic Level can be provided in the advertisement.

The Selection Criteria
In forming the selection criteria for the advertisement consider the qualifications, experience, knowledge and other personal attributes relevant to the position.

The criteria you use must be able to be accurately assessed by the selection committee by way of interview or task.

Relevant Links
Should the position be advertised externally, the advertisement will also be published on the Employment Opportunities webpage. Please include in your draft advertisement, the URL addresses of relevant links, for example, the School homepage.

Drafting Position Description for General Staff Positions

A Position Description (PD) should be drafted that includes the immediate supervisor for the position, an overall objective for the position, the selection criteria and the qualifications and skills required. Send the PD with the Staff Recruitment Request to Human Resource Services (HRS) as well as an electronic copy via email or disk.

When a position becomes vacant or a new position is created, the Human Resource Officer will meet with the relevant School/Organisational Unit staff to plan the recruitment and selection process and to discuss the various options available.
