Marine Science Student
Hi, my name is Deanne and I'm a 3rd year Bachelor of Science Degree student at Newcastle University, majoring in Marine Science. I work at a local dental surgery - I've worked there for the last 18 years, going from a full time to a part time position so that I can attend university.
Initially, I applied and wanted to do an Oral Health Degree, but for one reason or another I was offered a placement in a Science Degree, with the option of transferring after my first year to Oral Health. But as I became more involved within the science and marine science courses I found that marine science was what I wanted to do. I really enjoy the challenges that this degree provides; the hands on experiences in the lab environment and the outside field work.
During the university breaks I do voluntary work at the local Botanical Gardens, and I also plan to do some voluntary work at a local shark and ray centre. Voluntary work while doing your degree, gives you experience that you will not gain while at university and introduces you to people that you can gain a large amount of knowledge from and who may be able to assist you once you have completed your degree.
I have recently applied for an Indigenous Cadetship in Fisheries with the NSW Department of Primary Industries. As Marine Science is my major, ideally I would like to work with a department that is hands on such as the Fisheries. In my spare time I spend a lot of time on the water or in the water so for me working within the marine environment would be very rewarding. I would like to be able to assist in the management and sustaining of flora and fauna of our wonderful water bodies, fresh or marine. But this is only one option as a Marine Scientists, other career opportunities include working for Local government (city and shire councils), State government (catchment committees, EPA, marine parks), Federal government (Environment Australia CSIRO), private and industry consultants, universities and organisations with marine and estuaries interests.
Marine Science is only one of the paths available for you to choose from within the Science Degree, other options include:
- Earth Science
- Biological Sciences
- Sustainable Resource Management
- Sport Science
Regardless of what career path you chose a science degree provides you with the skills and knowledge you need as a foundation for your chosen career.
Finally, as a Wiradjuri woman I take great pride in knowing that I am representing my community while increasing my knowledge and following my dream of being a Marine Scientist.
