2008 University of Newcastle Teaching and Learning Project Grants

Teaching and Learning Project grants have been awarded for 2008. Ten projects will receive up to $10,000 to explore ways of engaging the research-teaching nexus to enhance the student experience. All five faculties of the University are collaborating on at least one of the projects.

Engaging the research-teaching nexus to enhance the student experience

The Research-Teaching Nexus brings a focus to the way research informs teaching practice. It may involve:

  1. Teaching that is explicitly informed by the pedagogical research on teaching practice, which can be generic or discipline specific. The overriding objective in this case is typically to improve one's teaching practice as a result of the research findings (one's own or other scholars') concerning a specific aspect of teaching practice.
  2. Teaching that incorporates one's own research on a specific topic (within a discipline), typically in creative or innovative ways that engage and inspire students.
  3. Teaching in which students (undergraduate, including honours) undertake a research project under close supervision and where the explicit objectives are to socialise students into research in a specific discipline.

A new website, The Teaching-Research Nexus: a guide for academics and policy-makers in higher education, is an outcome of an Australian Teaching and Learning Council (ALTC) project. The website examines the complexity of the teaching-research nexus in contemporary higher education and the possible ways in which research and teaching can be linked for the enhancement of student learning. The website is a resource for all academics and university staff, including those with leadership roles in teaching and learning, who wish to achieve better connections between teaching and research.
