CTL is delighted to be hosting Dr Dee Fink, professional and international consultant in higher education, who will conduct presentations and workshops to our academic community in the area of teaching and learning. There will be a number of sessions planned across Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th February designed to provide you with the five transformative teaching practices, the principles of course design for significant learning, and the opportunity to apply these principles to your teaching practice.

Day 1: Monday 25th February

Plenary Session: The Joy and Responsibility of Teaching Well
Date: Monday 25th Feb
Time: 10:00-11:30 a.m.
Venue: General Purpose Building - GP1.01
Morning tea will be provided

In this presentation, Dee Fink will lay out some of the reasons why higher education has become even more important than it was in the past and some of the evidence indicating we need to do a much better job of teaching than we currently are. The argument is then made that, in order to make significant improvements in their teaching, academics need to re-think four issues: WHAT we teach, HOW we teach, how we "GEAR UP"to teach, and WHO we are.

Workshop: Designing Courses for More Significant Student Learning
Date: Monday 25th Feb
Time: 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Catered lunch will be provided

This workshop examines the role of course design in the overall act of teaching, and then leads you through a new way of designing courses to create significant learning experiences for your students.

Day 2: Tuesday 26th February

Presentation: 5 Transformative Teaching Practices
Date: Tuesday 26th February
Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Afternoon tea will be provided

There are numerous new and good ideas about teaching "out there"that have been developed in the last two decades. But not all are equally powerful;some have the power to make a major transformation in the level of student engagement and the quality of student learning. In this presentation, Dee Fink will describe five teaching practices that have this power.

What does it take to win a National Teaching Award?

Awards for teaching and learning at a national level are highly competitive. It takes time, skill and effort to construct an application and gather support materials.

To find out what is involved, the Centre for Teaching and Learning are holding a workshop, to inform potential applicants about the process. Attendees will also hear from a panel of successful University of Newcastle recipients as share their experience and wisdom. Professor Tracy Levett-Jones, Professor Philip Morgan and Dr Michael Ondaatje will each speak of their journey with Australian Awards for University Teaching. Attendees will then have the opportunity to ask the panel any questions in relation to applying for awards.

2012 Teaching and Learning Showcase

The 2012 Teaching and Learning Showcase presents the findings and outcomes of the 2012 Teaching and Learning Grant projects, as well as providing attendees with the opportunity to explore ways of implementing these findings in your teaching and learning context.

The day starts with "Findings in Five", where each team presents an overview of their project in just five minutes. After morning tea, two grant teams will present their projects.

The Showcase then moves to the Shortland Building for lunch, project presentations and workshops.

Projects undertaken this year include:

  • A Virtual Pharmacy - an interactive 3D virtual pharmacy to enhance student engagement
  • "Sticky Moments" an e-learning resource to assist academics teaching about social disadvantage
  • Simulated education - a collaborative initiative by the Disciplines of Drama and Pharmacy.
  • Interprofessionalisation for health professional students

2011 Teaching and Learning Showcase

You are invited to attend the 2011 Teaching and Learning Showcase.

VENUE: Treehouse, Nelson and Lambert Rooms, Shortland Union Building, Callaghan campus

Nine project teams from across the University will present outcomes from projects related to areas of importance to teaching and learning at UoN. These areas include:

  • Enhancing outcomes for Master of Professional Accounting (MPAC) Students in Teaching and Learning
  • Visual Media Texts: Teaching and Assessing the Humanities and Social Sciences in a Post-literate Age
  • Academic literacy for first year teacher education students: skill base, achievement, retention and directions for integrated learning support
  • Establishing effective strategies and resources to facilitate teaching in the tertiary sector about minorities
  • Renewing Social Work Curriculum about non-heterosexuality to support student experience and increase professional development
  • Establishing an on-campus Speech Intelligibility Clinic
  • Wiki Ways and Cultural Competency - Enhancing the Student Learning Experience
  • Providing online access to Peer Assisted Review of Teaching Framework and Tools
  • Globalizing Screen Production Curricula: a Cross-Cultural Study

Findings in Five Session

Two recipients of 2011 University of Newcastle Teaching and Learning Fellowships will also present outcomes from their projects:

David Newby: Trialling a model of inter-professional assessment to support studentsÕ development of safe prescribing practices,

and

Morgan Kavanagh: Focussing on Elicos Upper Intermediate assessment, Morgan aims to convert existing listening tests to an online environment for the English Language and Foundation Studies Centre.

This year's Showcase is divided into three sessions, as outlined in the Showcase Program. You are invited to participate in as many of these sessions as you choose.
