Community Cultural Festival – Sharing our Cultures
Saturday 15 March 2008, the Jesmond community joined together to celebrate and acknowledge the strong cultural diversity of the region during Harmony Week with a Community Cultural Festival.
The festival featured performances of song and dance locally as well as from across the globe. Demonstrations, face painting, children’s activities and games were organised to create a festival atmosphere where the community could learn to live and play together as one.
The Lord Mayor, John Tate, Sonia Hornery and the Vice Chancellor Nick Saunders officially welcomed new members of the community with diverse cultural backgrounds to the country.
The festival was an initiative of the Jesmond Junction Committee which is a community support group aiming to provide cultural awareness by engaging the broader community and creating an environment of celebration and the sharing of cultures.
The group comprised of representatives from the University of Newcastle, Jesmond Neighborhood Centre, Newcastle City Council, Stockland, Department of Education & Training, Catholic Schools, Smith Family, Jesmond Uniting Church and Shortland Catholic Church.
