Previous UNISS scholar profile: Lisa

Lisa has completed a Chemical Engineering degree, and was sponsored by Tomago Aluminium.

The program was challenging in that you're working full time over your summer holidays; however, I think the benefits have far outweighed the downsides. I have found each time I have returned to Tomago I've been more prepared and more enthusiastic than the last time, as I have become accustomed to the working environment. What I think is so great about the UNISS program is it prepares you for the workforce well in advance of graduation, which gives you an edge above fellow students. It also allows you to see how industry really operates, and what types of jobs are available.

One thing I really appreciate is how approachable and friendly I found the UNISS staff. With their help, and a little rearranging of my Industry Placements, I was able to study in Calgary, Canada on exchange for a semester, which was an amazing experience.

The end of year Sponsor-Scholar Dinner is always a lot of fun as well.

On my 4th year 12-month placement at Tomago I was in charge of the quality control of Anodes purchased from France as part of an eight-month trial, which carries a certain degree of responsibility. I also had the opportunity to carry out my 4th year research project in conjunction with Tomago and the University on gas injected burner tips. Along with these two continuous jobs, I also carried out various trials and experiments associated with the expansions the plant is undergoing.
