Changes to Higher Education from 2005

In December 2003, the Australian Federal Parliament passed the Higher Education Support Act. As a result, a series of reforms to the higher education sector will take effect from 1 January 2005 and will have the largest impact on students commencing their university studies in 2005. The reforms have been presented to the Australian people in an integrated package, Our Universities: Backing Australia's Future. See:

The changes are referred to as the Higher Education Reforms and will affect education costs, higher education loans and how student learning entitlements are managed. They will have the largest impact on new students commencing University studies in 2005.

From 2005 at the University of Newcastle, most commencing students will pay an extra 25% on top of the base HECS rates.

There is also an option for undergraduate domestic students to apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for a fee paying place at the University and gain entry with a slightly lower UAI than the UAI cut-off for Commonwealth Supported (HECS) places. Fees can be viewed at:
