Glossary of Terms & Abreviations

CAS Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships
Scholarships provided by the Government to assist low income students with accommodation costs
CLS Commonwealth Learning Scholarships
Scholarships provided by the Government to help low income students finance their studies. These include CAS (Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships) and CECS (Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships)
Commonwealth Supported Student Students who are subsidised by the Australian Government and who are required to pay a student contribution (formerly HECS)
CECS Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships
Scholarships provided by the Government to assist low income students with general education costs
CHESSN Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number
A number provided by DEST (Dept. of Education Science and Training) to students from 2005 when they become a Commonwealth Supported or Fee HELP student
FEE-HELP Part of the Higher Education Loan Program which provides eligible Fee paying students with a loan for their fees with payments deferred until their income reaches $35,000
Fee Paying Student A student who is not government assisted and who pays the full cost of their studies
HELP

Higher Education Loan Program
Loans provided by the Australian Government when students elect not to pay their student contribution or fee up front. These consist of HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP or OS-HELP

HECS-HELP Part of the Higher Education Loan Program which provides Commonwealth supported students with a loan for their student contribution (formerly HECS) with payments deferred until their income reaches $35,000
HEIMS Higher Education Information Management System
A web-based information management system used by DEST to manage the reforms
HEIMS Student Public Portal Part of the Higher Education Information Management System where students will be able to access information on their SLE (Student Learning Entitlement), their HELP loans and CLS using their CHESSN
OS-HELP Part of the Higher Education Loan Program which provides eligible Commonwealth supported students who want to study overseas with a loan for a range of expenses. Payments are deferred until their income reaches $35,000
