New Podiatry lecturer

The University of Newcastle has appointed Dr Vivienne Chuter as the first member of its new podiatry program. Dr Chuter is an enthusiastic podiatrist with with a doctorate in biomechanics and teaching and research experience. She started work with the University late August. She is currently working on the curriculum for the new program. This is case-based and strongly supportive of evidence based podiatry practice.

The new podiatry program starts in 2007 with intakes into both the first and second years. Applicants who have successfully completed one or more years of another degree which included comparable anatomy and physiology can apply for advanced standing. Viv is also working on developing the clinical courses which will be co-located in an Area Health Service.

Since graduating in 1998 Viv has had several university teaching positions in Victoria and New South Wales. She has worked in both private and public sector podiatry, most recently holding a senior clinical position in a high risk foot clinic with the public health service in Tasmania.

Viv's main research interest is in gait analysis. She completed a PhD in biomechanics in early 2006 examining the effect of footwear design and functional foot orthoses on rearfoot kinematics, kinetics and plantar forces. She is particularly interested in the effect of the interface between the foot and the ground on muscle function in the lower limb. She is also very interested the development of evidence-based practice in podiatry. Consistent with this, she already has a number of publications relating to podiatry.
