The following 2008 fees apply to all commencing and continuing International undergraduate students, regardless of the year of commencement.
The University is currently undertaking a full review of its tuition fees for students. Fees for 2009 and beyond will be determined through this process.
This information applies to international students (i.e. NOT Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens) who are studying by distance mode outside Australia.
The fees listed below are in Australian dollars (AUD). Tuition fees for courses are set according to their academic subject area. A student's program fee may vary depending on their course selection.
Tuition fees for any given semester or trimester are due once the student completes the enrolment process for that term and tuition fees have been calculated. The student then receives a bill stating the amount due for that term.
All fees must be paid in full and on time. Non payment of tuition fees by the due date may result in the termination of a student's enrolment.
More information can be found in the University's Refund and Student Indebtedness policies.
Each degree program requires the completion of a number of units. To accumulate the necessary units, students enrol in courses according to the degree requirements for each program. Each course has a unit value and this is ten (10) for most courses at the University of Newcastle. A normal full-time study load is 80 units in any year or 40 units per semester.
Courses are grouped into a number of academic subject areas where the first four letter abbreviation at the beginning of the course code tells you its subject area. A full list of academic subject areas is available.
The information below includes an indicative annual program fee. To calculate your exact fee, you should check the requirements of your program in the Postgraduate eHandbook. Then have a look at the table further down this page called Course Fees by Academic Subject Area 2008 where the subject areas are listed in groups.
|
For example, if in 2008 you were to undertake 3 courses in Mathematics (MATH), 2 courses in Philosophy (PHIL), 2 courses in History (HIST) and 1 course in Chemistry (CHEM) then you would calculate your fees as follows: MATH: 3 x 1940.00 = 5820.00 PHIL: 2 x 1730.00 = 3460.00 HIST: 2 x 1730.00 = 3460.00 CHEM: 1 x 2480.00 = 2480.00 TOTAL = $15220.00 |
The above example assumes all courses have a 10 unit value. If a course has a value other than 10, then the calculation needs to be weighted appropriately.
You can estimate costs for later years based on these rates. However, course fees are increased each year.
Students enrolled in a number of programs have some flexibility in choosing courses outside their discipline area. Program costs are calculated on the assumption of typical courses taken for a full-time load of 40 units per teaching period (semester or trimester). Actual charges will be calculated based on courses selected and the workload undertaken.
The fees listed in this table are in Australian dollars (AUD) and are the average price of a program per year. They are INDICATIVE only. The actual annual program fee may vary depending on course selection. This means that if two students enrol in the same program, but study different courses during the year, they may pay different annual program fees.
The fees indicated apply to students completing their program in 2008. It is expected that course fees will rise in subsequent years and therefore programs which take more than 12 months to complete will be subject to the increased course fees.
Note: Fees for programs offered by GraduateSchool.com are not listed. Please refer to the GraduateSchool.com website for information on fees for those programs.
