The History
In 2010 the University of Newcastle introduced the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition for research higher degree candidates. Originally developed in 2008 by the University of Queensland, the academic competition for research students expanded to a national level in 2010, with 33 universities representing over 50,000 PhD and Masters students in Australia and New Zealand competing. The competition continues to grow with more competitors and countries competing annually.

UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE FINAL
On Friday 26 July, 2013 18 competitors from across all faculties took part in the University of Newcastle Final in the challenge to explain their research to an intelligent but non-specialist audience in just three minutes
The UoN Winners
Winner: Kymme Laetsch - PhD (Classics), The Portrayal and Implications of Femine Ageing in Latin Literature
Runner Up: Jason Girkin - PhD (Immunology & Microbiology), Cause and Prevention of Asthma Attacks
Third Place: Sally Hall - PhD (Biological Sciences), Non-surgical Sterilisation of Pest Species
Congratulations to all the finaists that competed on the day. The standard of presentations by all finalists were outstanding.
The UoN Judges
The judging panel consisted of Emeritus Prof Barry Maitland (Prof of Architecture and crime novelist), Ms Natasha Beyersdorf (NBN news presenter) and Ms Lee Shearer (Management consultant and former Senior Executive of the NSW Police force).
National/Trans-Tasman Competition
We all wish Kymme good luck for the 2013 National/Trans-Tasman competition which will be held on Friday 18 October 2013 at the University of Western Sydney. The winner of the National/Trans-Tasman comeptition will be awarded $5,000, the runner-up $2,000 and the people's choice recipient $1,000.
