NIC - your pathway to the University of Newcastle

Newcastle International College (NIC) provides international students with a pathway to the University of Newcastle through a range of programs taught in a supportive study environment.

Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP)

This nationally accredited Certificate IV pre-university program is equivalent to a foundation program or Year 12. It is designed for students who do not meet the academic requirements for direct entry to a degree program. The TPP prepares students for university level studies in the areas of Health and Medicine; Business, Law and Commerce; Science and Information Technology; and Education and Arts. Upon successful completion, students advance to an NIC Diploma program or directly to their chosen degree at the University of Newcastle, including the Bachelor of Medicine.

Diploma Programs

NIC offers a range of Diploma programs, consisting of eight academic courses (equivalent to the first year of a  University of Newcastle bachelor degree). Successful completion of the Diploma provides students with guaranteed entry to the second year of their bachelor degree. The following diploma programs are available:
 
Diploma of Business and Commerce: leading to Business or Commerce degrees with majors in Accounting; Economics; Finance; International Business; Management; Marketing; Supply Chain Management; and Tourism

Diploma of Engineering: leading to Engineering degrees with specialisations in Civil; Computer; Electrical; Mechanical; Mechatronics; Surveying; Telecommunications; and (Honours) Surveying.

Diploma of Media and Communication: leading to the Bachelor of Communication with majors in Journalism; Media Production; Media Studies; and Public Relations

Diploma of Information Technology: leading to the Bachelor of Information Technology with specialisations in Business Information, Communication and Technology; Digital Media and Entertainment.

Provisional Entry Program

Students with an IELTS score of 5.5 (and the appropriate academic requirements) begin Diploma studies on a Provisional Entry Program (PEP). Students enroll in a Communication and literacy course, which focuses on academic literacy and study skills. This module is completed concurrently with two academic diploma courses in the first trimester. The remaining six diploma courses are then completed over the next two trimesters.

English language requirement

• IELTS 5.5 or equivalent – Certificate IV Tertiary Preparation Program
• IELTS 6.0 or equivalent – Certificate IV Tertiary Preparation Program leading to Bachelor of Medicine
• IELTS 5.5 or equivalent – Diploma including Provisional Entry Program
• IELTS 6.0 or equivalent – Diploma

Duration

• Tertiary Preparation Program – 2 to 3 trimesters (8 – 12 months)*
• Diploma including Provisional Entry Program - 3 trimesters (12 months)
• Diploma – 2 to 3 trimesters (8 - 12 months)

*Two semesters for TPP students on the foundation pathway to Medicine 

Intakes

• Tertiary Preparation Program -  February, June and October, except the foundation pathway to Medicine which has  one intake per year in February/March.
