Surviving Stats: Statistics for Tertiary Studies - Health, Social & Life Sciences

This course is an introduction to a range of concepts encountered during a statistics course at university and aims to build a fundamental understanding of these concepts and their application. The course assumes no background knowledge of statistics, however basic numeracy and algebraic skills are required. Although limited emphasis is placed upon mathematical calculations, students will be required to perform simple statistical procedures to demonstrate their skills and understanding. Course notes will be available.
The course, which starts with an introduction to statistics and its application in various fields, covers:
- the differences between theory construction and hypothesis testing
- the role of different statistical approaches in various circumstances
- the importance of choosing the appropriate statistical procedure to match the circumstances
- a short introduction to probability
