Systems analysts take into account the existing business models and data flow systems of an organisation and design solutions that promote productivity and efficiency. This may cover areas such as market research, strategic planning and IT needs. Analysts may also be responsible for rolling out and implementing their processes and procedures within an organisation and must be able to modify and tailor it to meet changing needs or circumstances.
Aside from holding the technical skills to design systems, analysts must be prepared to work with their client and develop solutions to meet their specific needs. They must also be able to effectively communicate their ideas often to audiences with little to no knowledge of the specialist area.
Entry into this field may be gained through computer science, IT, mathematics and business programs. Employment opportunities may be increased by completion of business or accounting based electives or specialist post-graduate training. Business/systems analysts can find employment within almost any type of business, some may be employed in house, or by a specialist IT company who outsource. The banking and finance industry and software development and manufacturing firms are also major sources of employment.
