Museum publications officers/editors are responsible for facilitating all aspects of the publication process for information about museum collections and associated research. They contribute to the development and implementation of publications policy, recommend material for publication, develop budgets, identify funding sources, edit text including manuscripts, books, catalogues, brochures, journals, annual reports, broadsheets and labels and supervise production of all printed material produced by the museum. Depending on the size and needs of their employer, they may also secure copyright and copyright clearances and liaise with museum staff such as curators, educators, designers and photographers, printers and distributors.
A variety of educational backgrounds may prepare graduates for this type of employment, though studies in a museum relevant major may be preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are also important as is creativity and an attention to detail.
