Import/export officers manage the logistical and administrative aspects of the import and export of goods. They are usually employed by manufacturing companies or specialist organisations who manage the import/export requirements of their clients. Typical tasks include:
- Preparing documentation and keeping records for use by both the company itself and regulatory bodies such as customs
- Liaising with transportation companies
- Coordinating shipments and processing orders
There is no specific educational path to a career in the import/export industry, though foreign language skills, policy and legislation knowledge and the general written and verbal communication skills gained in a tertiary degree are well regarded. Experience in customs, international trade, inventory, logistics and supply chain are all highly sought by employers.
